Frequently asked questions about drone photography and videography services, including Videos, Photos, Panoramas, Orthomosaic mapping, 3d models/maps,
📌 Service & Operations
Do you need permits for drone photography?
Sometimes, yes. Operating a drone over 250g in weight requires a RPAS pilot certificate (license) from Transport Canada.
Launching and landing from most places requires permission of the owner of that property, in many jurisdictions that comes in the form of a permit from the city/town if launching the drone in a park. (like for a wedding photography session)
Drone photography of an outdoor advertised event (like a parade, concert, farmers market, sporting event) requires a Special Flight Operation Certificate (SFOC) from Transport Canada that takes 6 weeks to obtain.
Are you Licensed?
I (Rodrick MacPherson) have been a Transport Canada certified Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) pilot since 2019. Crew members (if any help is required) would be trained by me or have their own Transport Canada RPAS pilot license.

🎥 Photography & Videography
What Resolutions and formats can you deliver?
For Photography, I would deliver at least 12MP photos, depending on the type and requirements, higher resolutions are obtainable with different camera settings, or stitching images together for panoramas or overhead maps (Orthophotography)
Photos are typically shot in raw DNG format for editing and colour adjustments, but delivered in JPG format.
Videos are delivered in MP4 or MOV formats at 1080p or 4K resolutions
What is an Orthomosaic?
Picture Google Earth, but in more detail.
An Orthomosaic (the output of a process called Photogrammetry, or Aerial Mapping) is exactly what Google’s satellite view on Google Maps or Google Earth is doing, but their cameras are way up in orbit. Mine is just a few hundred feet off the ground. You get that same top-down view but with lots more detail and clarity and shot just the day or two before it was delivered to you, not months or years ago. It’s not just a snapshot from an overhead view though, it takes dozens, or hundreds of photos and stiches them together for a high resolution, highly detailed image.
It also does not have to be top-down. I can do the same process for the facade of a building, allowing facilities maintenance teams to get a close up look without renting scaffolds or ladders to look over every inch in detail.

Can you provide thermal imaging?
Not yet, but I am very interested in getting into this. If you have a need, please let me know.
Do you provide editing services?
I will do basic colour grading for drone video, and add titles, and transitions if requested. If something more creative is desired we can chat about it and I will offer that as a custom service.
Can you livestream drone footage?
Yes. I can livestream drone footage. Livestreaming is limited to 720P resolution, and can be sent to any streaming software that supports RTMP. An additional crewmember with a laptop can take the raw stream from the drone and add overlays (like the news channel lower third, or other on-screen graphics such as a frame, logo, or overlay of a commentator… your imagination, time and budget are the only limitations.
It is important to remember that a drone typically only has about 30 minutes of battery life, so livestreaming a longer event would require breaks that cut away to alternate footage or a second drone with a second pilot.
If this event that is to be livestreamed is an advertised outdoor event that is open to the public an SFOC from Transport Canada would be required. This permit takes 6 weeks to process, so plan ahead accordingly and contact me well in advance of your event.
Can you do photos at night?
Yes. I can. I have equipped my drones with additional lighting to make it more visible to myself and to other aircraft that might be in the area so that it complies with the regulations for night flight, and to make it safer for everyone. If the photo you have in mind is a night shot, I am ready for that.

💰 Pricing & Packages
How does pricing work?
Pricing can vary based on a lot of different factors.
If permits or air traffic control permissions are required to be obtained prior to the job, or the job is complex, requiring additional people, that would have an effect on pricing.
Please send details to info@bydrone.ca for an estimate.
Is a deposit required?
If you are booking an event, yes a non-refundable deposit will be required. Events take planning work and permit applications that are required ahead of time.
For real estate, business promo, construction site work, or anything else besides an event, a deposit is not needed.
Do you charge extra for travel?
If I need to travel to get to the site that you want photographed/mapped, I charge mileage at standard CRA rates, plus travel time at my hourly rate, or If using a day rate, travel time and costs are included in that day rate.
If overnight accommodations are required those costs would be billed accordingly.
🛡️ Safety & Compliance
What safety measures do you take during flights?
Much like pilots of manned aircraft, I have checklists for everything: Preflight prep, crew briefings, take-off, landing, various emergency scenarios.
Prior to flights risk assessments are performed, I study the site itself, check aviation weather sources, look up nearby airports, heliports and aerodromes, obtain any permissions that are required, build a list of emergency contacts for the area in case of an incident or accident.
Safety and first aid equipment appropriate to the job will be on hand.
During flights I, and any pilot or visual observer working with me will be scanning the airspace and ground for hazards.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If the weather is bad and a flight cannot be performed that day I can reschedule, or if it is a set-time event, there would be no charge beyond the non-refundable deposit that covers pre-flight work in the weeks leading up to the event.
Do you comply with Transport Canada RPAS regulations?
Yes, absolutely!
I am Transport Canada certified and all operations will be conducted according to all applicable laws.
📦 Deliverables & Turnaround
How quickly will I receive my photos/videos?
Turnaround time is generally quick, but depends on complexity of editing required after the filming.
Generally, photos or Orthomosaic mapping can be delivered in a few days, simpler edited videos within a week. Videos requiring complex editing will be quoted before the job.
How are files delivered?
Files are delivered by digital download or on USB stick, or if you prefer, on a CD/DVD.
Do you keep backups of my footage?
I do! But the digital download will only be online to access for a limited time. cloud storage adds up to be expensive, so it is important to copy the files to your own device or your own cloud storage as soon as you can to ensure that it does not become unavailable to you.
If you need an old file re-uploaded for you after it has been taken offline, there will be a fee for that.
Can you do prints?
People rarely ask for this, but yes, I can do prints, I can do t-shirts, mugs, all that stuff if you want it. If you want your property/building made into a wall map or poster just let me know, and I will make it happen.
🌟 Client Experience
Can you work with my marketing team or Realtor?
I would love to. 😁
Can I be on-site during the shoot?
Yes, absolutely. I only request that anyone who wishes to be on-site to be there at the beginning and attend a short safety briefing. Please understand that when I am “at the sticks” controlling the drone, my attention needs to be on that, keep questions brief or wait until I am able to land it.
Do you provide sample work or a portfolio?
You are at it.
Please browse around the bydrone.ca site. There are sections pertaining to different types of work I can do for you.
📅 Booking & Logistics
How far should I book in advance?
For anything other than an advertised public event, I can normally fit you in within a week.
For advertised public events the rules are complicated, there is a special permit required and Transport Canada wants 6 weeks to process that. So you really have to plan ahead and book early. As soon as you know when you want to have the event, and let me know about any planned alternate dates in case of rainy weather.
What if I need something tomorrow?
Depending on what it is I just might be able to pull it off. Give me a call (647)478-8557 or send me an email info@bydrone.ca and ask.
What area(s) do you cover?
I am based in Pickering Ontario. I am happy to take on work within a 2 hour drive from there. Even on short notice, if you are in Clarington, Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Scarborough, Port Perry, Uxbridge, or Markham I can usually get out to your site probably next day to check it out and within a few days to do the shoot.
There are times when I am more than happy to take on jobs that involve some travel. With sufficient time I will travel to just about anywhere within Canada.
